Wright Trial Continues

Daphne Wright’s murder trial resumes this morning at 9:00 at the
Minnehaha County Courthouse. Wright is accused of kidnapping and
killing Darlene VanderGiesen.

Following opening statements Monday, eight witnesses testified for the state.

VanderGiesen’s sister testified about threatening emails that could
suggest motive in the murder case. State’s Attorney Dave Nelson told
the jury VanderGiesen was not a lesbian, but Wright was still jealous
and thought the woman would destroy her relationship with her
girlfriend.

Wright’s lawyers say her words have been twisted around, and no
direct evidence proves she committed a crime.

If found guilty, Wright could be the first woman in South Dakota to
get the death penalty. The trial is expected to last about a month.
