Prosecutors in Sioux Falls are calling witnesses for the second week of testimony in the trial of a deaf woman accused of killing and dismembering an acquaintance.
Daphne Wright is charged with murder and kidnapping for the February 2006 slaying of Darlene VanderGiesen. Her remains were found in the Sioux Falls landfill and a Minnesota ditch.
If Wright is convicted, jurors will be asked to sentence Wright to death by lethal injection.
It’s the first capital punishment trial in South Dakota with a female defendant.
