Jurors In Deaf Dismemberment Trial To Deliberate

Jurors in South Dakota’s first capital punishment trial with a female defendant will start deliberating Wednesday after lawyers give closing arguments.

Daphne Wright is accused of abducting, killing and dismembering Darlene VanderGiesen, another deaf woman from Sioux Falls.

If jurors convict Wright of murder or kidnapping, prosecutors will ask them to sentence her to death by lethal injection.

The jury could also find Wright guilty of a lesser homicide count.

One of Wright’s lawyers says one possible scenario is that VanderGiesen died as the result of a fall down the stairs at Wright’s house.

Prosecutors say Wright killed VanderGiesen because of jealousy.
