Family Reacts To Wright Verdict

By Kelli Grant

For many in the courtroom, Daphne Wright’s verdict brought a mixture of emotions.

It’s a day family and friends of Darlene VanderGiesen have been waiting for for over a year. And even though a guilty verdict was handed down on all three counts, VanderGeisen’s family is still trying to find closure.

The trial was expected to last several weeks. But just before noon, Darlene VanderGiesen’s family and friends filed into the Minnehaha County Courthouse to learn the fate of Daphne Wright.

Wright’s mother was also there, escorted by her daughter’s defense.

The VanderGeisen family held close to each other as the judge read the verdict and as they left the courthouse. With the sentencing phase of the trial yet to begin, it’s still difficult to find words to express their emotions, even a year after the crime.

Since there is more to this trial than the guilty verdict, the prosecution is waiting to talk.

As Daphne Wright sobbed in the courtroom, her mother remained motionless. She tells KELOLAND news that she feels the trial wasn’t fair to her daughter. But, along with the defense, she would not talk about the jury’s decision.

It was obvious the case has put strain on the jury. Court was delayed after the verdict was read to give jurors time to compose themselves.
