Wright Trial: Jurors To Resume Deliberations

Jurors deciding the fate of South Dakota’s first female defendant in a capital punishment case deliberated more than four hours before breaking for the night.

The prosecution and defense gave closing arguments Wednesday afternoon and the final jury of eleven women and one man got the case.

Daphne Wright is accused of abducting, killing and dismembering Darlene VanderGiesen, another deaf woman from Sioux Falls.

If jurors convict Wright of first-degree murder or kidnapping, prosecutors will ask them to sentence her to death by lethal injection. The jury could also find Wright guilty of a lesser homicide count.

Prosecutors say Wright killed VanderGiesen out of jealousy and all the evidence points to her.

Defense lawyers say the state provided no evidence to convict Wright from the day VanderGiesen was killed and instead focused on the dismemberment.
