The sentencing phase of in the Daphne Wright murder trial begins today.
Each side will present its case, then it will be up to the jury to determine if Wright should be sentenced to death for the kidnapping and killing of Darlene VanderGiesen.
Monday, Wright’s attorneys made several attempts to end the death penalty proceedings. They claim previous cases show deaf defendants can not be sentenced to death, and the State’s Attorneyâ€™s office was racially motivated in asking for the death penalty.
The judge listened to the prosecutors, and rejected the defense’s claims. The penalty phase of the trial will begin at 9:00 this morning.
