  1. People need to stop saying negative things about PRDS. PRDS did its best. They cancelled for number of reasons as Don explains above. It was not one reason but many reasons together. It was too much, like ton of bricks on PRDS head.

  2. Hello Don! Long time no seen! =)

I do understand your situation very well. I rather not comment further. I know RAD since 1977. This is why I “refuse” to work in that area as too many issues and not enuf obligation.

So keep positive and there is always another way around next time! Smile!

  3. Let’s face the facts. PRDS is full of cow manure. They screwed up. They knew what they were getting into. They were given the conference policies and guidelines way before they even bid. They had 4 years to get their act together and get the conference going. They are behaving like cry babies. Don says he sent out 750 letters for sponsorships. I bet he is exaggerating. None-the-less, they should have done more fundraising. They had plenty of time to pull this off.

  4. Well You can see what happen to other chapters….. NWRAD who cut off with RAD, not longer to be RAD chapter (hosted event in Seatle) and CMRA of washington, DC crashed due to RAD interperter sued (2005 Conference). I can see the list of inactive chapters which is more than active chapters. I support PRDS’s decision to avoid this happen like other chaprters.

  5. Whoever said this….”Let’s face the facts. PRDS is full of cow manure. They screwed up. They knew what they were getting into. You know nothing! PERIOD!

  6. I hope their experiences would help the Windy City RAD prepare for RAD 2009 and learn the right way.

Also, RAD – you see the middle “A” – alliance – I thought that means “Joining together”, but all I see was some of the hatred comments on almost whole comments. Quit being a bitch and get on with the program!

So, hopefully no one would spread rumors about Windy City RAD – I’m sure they’re doing it perfectly as I could see they’re organized (and I don’t want to say “or I could be wrong…” I’m being positive and all that :-) So, say something nice and support Windy City RAD!!!

  7. One thing, local chapters don’t have to be responsible to provide rooms for IDL International Deaf Leather. In past, RAD and IDL went along well.
IDL took well care of themselve with or without RAD. IDL contest still run between RAD conference as annual contest therefore RAD host biannual conference.
Don G. on this video is not correct about IDL.

  8. Ahhhhh. Have a better picture now of what happened. So many different stories have been flying around. Glad to have the full story straight from the sources. Thank you.

  9. Thank you Don for taking the time to explain why PRDS backed off. Your explanation makes sense to me.

    I see the problem here:

IDL: They need to be working with you to set up their program. Any host should NOT have to work for them, both parties need to work TOGETHER (Alliance)

Local Chapters: They should be helping you financially by fundraising. Perhaps because of their past experience with RAD, I am not surprised to see them not wanting to help because they got screwed after the conferences in the past. This is where GLOW and GLAD-E should come in. Where are they when PRDS needed them?

Now I’m not sure if I want to go to Chicago’s conference in 2009. Will RAD and IDL work better with Chicago host? Will their Conference ByLaws be revised and clarified. That remains to be seen.

  10. First of all I want to applaud Don for sharing his feelings and thoughts with all of us. As a former member of LA RAD’93 committee, Our group worked very hard to provide a outstanding conference. We had some disagreement with the RAD board members and it was not easy working with them and getting their support. What we did was ignore the board and continute to provide the conference. We had to deal with some group of deafies demanding some of their money back from 1991 Dallas conference which they ran of money and suppose to refund back some money when Dallas committes had to cancel one event. We the LA committes had to deal with that without any help from the RAD Board.
However, after our ’93 LA conference we succesfully raised sufficent profit and dedcided to donate to local charities. The club SCRSD (South California Rainbow Society of the Deaf) decided to close the chapter due to not enough particapants from the younger generation. They were many old members who have been with SCRSD for many years. This has nothing to do with the club going bankrupt after the conference. We are proud to provide our ’93 LA RAD conference with great success. Thank you

  11. IMHO both screwed up. PRDS should not have accepted to host if they couldn’t follow through. RAD should have provided more support.

It’s over now. Hopefully everyone can learn a lesson and apply it to future conferences.

  12. Don, I must applaud you for doing this. I know it was not an easy task to just stand up and explain the real deal especially with all the negative floating around. I must admit that it was dishearting when I found out that PRDS was no longer a host, BUT I understood why. I saw you guys worked like a dog, balancing career, home , PRDS and RAD 207 conference host. As I saw that you guys poured hearts and soul reaching out to: donors, contributors, seeking grants and all, it was rather disappointing that PRDS didnt get 30% of responses. It was thier loss for not experiencing something great as PRDS, only deaf GLBTQQ organization in Atlanta area with members from NC, SC and the likes. Only thing saddes me, all the energy, time, effort that you guys have put forth for the last few years as fallen on “DEAF EYES”. But I tell myself, thats a true organization… the effort, time and energy is what defines all of you “P R D S”. I agree that it was difficult when you guys are faced different obstacles, but you ACTUAlly TIRED AND I SAW THAT…

Don and PRDS members.. keep shining…

Admiring from the distance, A Lifelong PRDS member in NYC

  13. I concur with HMB… Both RAD and PRDS screwed up. I hope Chicago people will do a better job than these idiots who ran the last conference. into the ground.
