December 1 is World AIDS Day.  Please take a moment to remember the
many special people we’ve lost to AIDS and HIV-related complications.

The Deaf Queer Resource Center recently updated the List of Names of
Deaf Lost to AIDS website.  The list includes the names of CODAs,
interpreters and hearing signers who were an active part of the Deaf

  1. Thank you for keep update the list. Every year I am sad to see more names there. So many I do remember like Sam Edwards, Bruce Hlibok, Dino, Mike Felts. They are gone now but not in my heart and memory.

  2. In memory of all names included my best friend, Bill Bradley, Bill would have turned 47 yesterday. I thought of him yesterday. I agree with Jimmy above that all friends are in my heart and memory too.

  3. Just reading down the list of names brought me down a memory lane with many wonderful loving friends and my partner. I realized there was one missing … Daniel Evans originally from Iowa but spent many years in Chicago. Unfortunately, there recently is a dear friend who passed away … Barbe Gurga (due to cancer) also from Chicago. May they all rest in peace OR party hard on our behalf upstairs. I love y’all!!!

  4. Hello there folks –
I am missing one more name of the person on the names list lost to AIDS. Correct me if I am wrong. Does anyone know a person “Rosie” with a signed name one finger on each breast? Birth name was Malcom something. I worked at the public library and heard “she” passed away recently this year. I was getting to know her but was surprised and saddened to hear she passed away.

  5. I guess I’m lucky. I don’t know any of those listed. I guess it is mostly from the older generations.

  6. Thank you, Drago, for your continued commitment to keeping the list up-dated and not allowing us to forget. ILY

  7. It is too bad we only think about AIDs once a year. Now there are drugs so people aren’t taking it too serious anymore. It’s a shame.

  8. Thank you for keeping this list updated. ICSDeaf, LLC (Sign Language Interpreting Firm) Supports Deaf Queer (dor) Org!

Great organization would love to partner and support. Let us know if there is anything that we can do to assist. Awareness!

  9. Thank You, DQRC for bringing awareness on AIDS to the deaf communities all over the world!!! Without all of you volunteers, this will not be possible. Bless you!

For those we lost, we can carry the memories in our hearts but must carry on their work. Banish away the silence and fear. Knowledge is power!

  10. I don’t mean to be mean or insensitive or ignorant in the least bit, but you all have awful writing skills. I happened to come across this page after searching for Daphne Wright. I just watched her episode of Snapped. Anyway, I was just wondering why it is your disability negatively affects your writing. Again, I don’t mean to be a bitch, I just never knew deaf people had trouble with the written word.

  11. Please add my dear friend, Joey Bofenkamp to the list , he died of aids back year of 2000. I saw some of my friends on the list that i havent seen or heard for years and to my saddended, i saw few of them on the list. It broke my heart but i always cheris them in my heart of good memories. Love you guys.

  12. I think you might miss someone that I knew from Florida that he died from AIDS. His name is Forest Hankerson. So wonder if anyone can confirm that and maybe put his name on that list.
    Thanks
