Jury Selection in Daphne Wright Murder Trial to Continue Monday

By Josh Verges / Argus Leader

Jury selection in the capital murder case against Daphne Wright will run into a fourth week, officials said.

That means opening arguments in the trial may not begin Monday as first thought.

Through Thursday, Judge Brad Zell qualified 56 jurors to hear the case.

After taking today off, he will reopen the courtroom Monday morning to pick three more. The attorneys from each side will then dismiss three-fourths of those. Those peremptory strikes allow the attorneys to remove jurors without giving a reason.

The trial is expected to run Mondays through Thursdays for three to four weeks.

Wright, 43, is accused of kidnapping, first-degree premeditated murder and murder while committing a felony against Darlene Vander-Giesen, 42.

If convicted on any of those charges, she could become the first woman a South Dakota jury orders to die.

The same jurors would decide whether Wright gets death by lethal injection or life in prison.
