Wright’s Roommate Testifies

By Lou Raguse

Daphne Wright’s roommate testified that the defendant woke up
especially early in the days following Darlene VanderGiesen’s
disappearance, and that Wright was suspiciously gone for four hours
that Friday night.

Jacki Chesmore owns the house at 1806 South Phillips Ave., where
prosecutors believe Wright killed and dismembered VanderGiesen.
Chesmore is disabled; she has no sense of smell and has trouble using
stairs as a result of a car accident.

Chesmore says Wright told her she wanted to clean up the unfinished
basement and take old carpet and pieces of cement to the Dumpster.
She saw Wright leave at 6 p.m., but the woman didn’t return home
until after 10:00 PM when Chesmore went to bed.

That weekend, Chesmore saw Wright apparently cleaning something in
the vehicle they shared. Chesmore also noticed her cleaning bucket in
the SUV.

When Chesmore was allowed back into her house after investigators
finished searching it, she noticed swirls of dark blue paint
throughout the basement.

In cross examination, Chesmore testified that she does not like
Wright’s girlfriend Sallie Collins. Collins used to live with
Chesmore and Wright in the home. Chesmore acknowledged that Collins
was in the house the week of the murder. Wright’s lawyers asked
questions about Collins’s temper, implying that Collins is capable of
murder.

Chesmore says she never knew VanderGiesen.

Det. Michael Olson of the Sioux Falls police department is now on the
witness stand. He is the detective who first interrogated Wright.
