Nelson tells jurors to remember dismemberment as they consider death

Public defender Jeff Larson has begun his closing statements in the death penalty phase of Daphne Wright’s murder trial.

After closing statements, jurors will be asked to consider whether to sentence Wright to death or life in prison. They could get the case as early as this afternoon.

Wright was convicted last week of kidnapping and murder in the slaying of VanderGiesen. Prosecutors maintain that Wright then used a chainsaw to dismember the body.

Earlier this morning, Minnehaha County State’s Attorney Dave Nelson asked jurors to remember the dismemberment as they consider whether Wright deserves to die for the crimes.

“When you think about depravity of mind, think about this defendant chopping up Darlene with a chain saw and then hours later going to Darlene’s home, seeing her mother, embracing her mother and saying to her mother, you are in my prayers, the same thing on that card,” Nelson said. “And ask yourself, how dare her? … What does that tell you about her mind?”
