Most not surprised by Wright verdict

By Craig Henry

Most residents contacted Thursday said they were not surprised the jury found Daphne Wright guilty of kidnapping, first-degree murder and felony murder of Darlene VanderGiesen.

“I kind of had sentimental feeling about it,” said Shane Reinke, 32, of Sioux Falls. “I worked with Darlene (VanderGiesen, the victim) for two and half years years at JDS Industries. I’m pleased to hear that. I was a little worried.”

While many felt the same as Reinke, happy to hear the verdict, they disagree about the punishment she should receive. Some say Wright shouldn’t receive the death penalty, one of the possible sentences, while others believe that’s the appropriate punishment.

Verlyn Schmidt said that from all the evidence that was presented, it was obvious that she was guilty.

“I think it’s great,” he said. “I think she deserves it.”

Dotty Parker was expecting the outcome to be a guilty verdict, but like Weiland, she doesn’t think the death penalty is the answer.

“I don’t know about that,” she said. “I would lean the other way. I tend to not believe in the death penalty.”

But others still believe that because of the nature of the crimes, Wright deserves to be the first woman in the state of South Dakota to be sentenced to death.

“According to everything I have heard and read, she’s guilty,” said T.J. Hernandez, 39, of Sioux Falls. “I would think (she would get the death penalty) for what she did to that lady.”
